John Kerry has made the rumors official, John Edwards, the junior Senator from North Carolina will be the Democratic running mate.

Here’s a column by yours truely from several months ago, endorsing Edwards for the nomination during the primaries: “Edwards is the only candidate adequately focusing on this growing gap between rich and poor America. He is also the only candidate with a realistic chance of success who has actually lived through the American nightmare of working-class isolation.”

  1. The New York Post said he chose Gephardt. And I thought they were a reliable news source…

  4. Kerry shoulda chose Mary Landrieu or Kathleen Sebelius or Loretta Sanchez. If Bush drops “F*** off” boy and puts Powell or Rice or Elizabeth Dole on the ticket instead, the 2 white male Democrats could be in big trouble.

  6. Here’s the text of the fubar Post article from a wildly unreliable source. Have fun. If the link dies, I saved the text and can republish it here. :)

  7. Not to sound elitist or anything, but the democratic party has been pretty good since it was created in running two white men on their tickets and winning… Maybe they should try running more minorities in general… but for some reason, that hasnt happened so much

  8. This pick just doesn’t seem to add anything besides a good looking face to the ticket. Even his voting record is almost identical to Kerry’s. He probabley will even have a hard time of delivering North Caolina to the Kerry column. And if he can’t add North Carolina to the column how can he help out with other southern states? He wasn’t even able to win a southern primary besides South Carolina.

Vice presidential canidates usually add a base or some aspect of expertise that the top of the ticket is lacking such as the picks of Chaney and Gore to help out with the foreign policy weaknesses of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Or the pick of LBJ to JFK to bring Texas in to the column for the Dems. Charisma and good looks don’t seem to me to be an important factor for the vice presidential pick because it’s usually the charisma and the good looks of the presidential canidate that people look at since they tend to be in the spotlight more.
