On the “City Budget Cuts Proposed” thread initiated on Dec. 11, 2008, I called upon the Mayor and City Council members to vote themselves a pay cut or, in the alternative, to voluntarily donate back to the City Treasurer part of their pay as elected officials in order to set good examples to all city employees that pay cuts are needed to address declining revenues.
I am happy to report that the Mayor announced at the last City Council meeting that he was returning $1,273.00 of his annual mayor’s salary back to the city to match the percentage decrease that the firefighter’s union was agreeing to to stave off layoffs for a period of time.
Details can be found in the January 21, 2010 edition of the Ann Arbor Chronicle in its coverage of that session.
Some City Council members stated they would follow suit.
Hieftje’s announcement tracks pay reductions voluntarily agreed to by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners last year to address declining revenues at the county level.
I salute Mayor Hieftje for his leadership in this regard and hope that all City Council members follow suit.

Re #30: the BOC did not take pay reductions. They did slightly scale back their permitted expense, per diem, and travel budget allocations.

Re Post#33:
Check Posts #18 and #19 from the June 12, 2009 thread “How Will the County to Deal With the Projected Deficit?”
According to Commissioner Gunn, there was a “salary” reduction voted for Commission members.
Do the allowances you refer to constitute “salary” or was Commisioner Gunn referring to the base pay rather than the allowances?
Perhaps someone could clarify.
