40 Barton Hills teens cited for drinking

On New Years Eve, Washtenaw County Sheriffs busted a party in Barton Hills, citing 40 teenagers for underage drinking.

A 17-year-old boy apparently hosted the party while his mother was in Florida, Egeler said. It’s unclear where the teenagers got the alcohol.

Police also found damage inside the home, including broken windows and lamps, but it wasn’t known who caused the damage, Egeler said.

After the police left, the teens threw a power ballad on the record player and a wacky cleaning montage ensued. The parents never knew what happened.

Well, not until reading about it in the paper, at least.

  1. Dear me. I knew Barton Hills approximated a gated community, but I hadn’t realized quite how close to an 80s rich-kid movie this approximated. According to the 2000 Census, Barton Hills has a population of 335, and a per capita income of $110,683. Yes, per capita. Compare with Ann Arbor’s $26,419 and Washtenaw County’s $27,173.

I don’t know anything about Barton Hills’ property values (Larry?), but if they follow the income, then it’s little wonder Barton Hills seceded from A2 (in 1971, says Wikipedia).

  2. I think its interesting that the entire county’s PCI is higher than the city of Ann Arbor’s… I always think of AA as the most elite part of the county and the outer areas as less-wealthy. Hmm.

  3. I think part of the Ann Arbor disparity is the size of the student population (note median ages, below)—most students have pretty low incomes. Also, since Ann Arbor is the county seat and has a lot of the county’s services located here, it gets a decent share of the people seeking those services.

Lemme waste some time digging for numbers. Per Capita Incomes for…

    Washtenaw: $27,173 (median age: 31)
Ann Arbor: $26,419 (median age: 28)
    Ypsi: $16,692 (median age: 24)

Looks like Ann Arbor Twp is also way over the County average ($50k+), but has a small population. Scio ($37k) and Pittsfield ($29k) are probably where most of the difference is made.
