For years, Ann Arbor had fireworks. First at Buhr Park, then at the airport. They were a great community tradition. I think they were sponsored by the Jaycees with much of the money coming from a local businessman. I’m curious how communities much smaller than Ann Arbor can afford fireworks, but we can’t.

Actually Mr. Monahan (Dominos former owner) threw them for free. Some liberals complained about the noise so he canceled them because the city was ungrateful.
There were plenty of unofficial and uninsured fireworks displays in my neighborhood, including several shots that went well above the tree line.
The relatively local fireworks news that made the national wires was an Independence Twp pair that got hurt badly when their improvised explosive devices got triggered accidentally. Link w/video:
