Why: Scalia’s Record Sucks

A brief introduction to Justice Antonin Scalia’s record since he was appointed to the Supreme Court by Ronald Reagan in 1986

Voted to:

• Uphold anti-sodomy laws that criminalized homosexual behavior (Lawrence v. Texas, 2003)
• Allow the Boy Scouts to discriminate based on sexual orientation (Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, 2000)
• Prohibit gays and lesbians from obtaining equal rights (Romer v. Evans, 1996)
• Strike down U of M’s affirmative action admissions policies (Grutter v. Bollinger and Gratz v. Bollinger, 2003)
• Limit employer liability for sexual harassment by employees (Burlington v. Ellerth, 1998)
• Allow Congress to overrule individuals’ Miranda rights (Dickerson v. United States, 2000)
• Shorten time between sentencing and executions (Williams v. Warden Taylor, 2000)
• Use taxpayer funding for parochial school materials (Mitchell v. Helms, 2000)
• Prohibit rape victims from suing their attackers (United States v. Morrison, 2000)
• Disallow states from banning cigarette ads near schools (Lorillard v. Reilly and Altadis USA v. Reilly)
