Currently, the 9 Councilmembers are elected at-large, a situation which many feel makes them unaccountable to voters. Detroiters for Reform wants to divide the city into 9 Wards, each with a single Councilmember. They are collecting signatures to put the question on this year’s ballot, and need 32,218 by August 3rd – a tight timeline. The Detroit News supports the change: Districts are overdue for Detroit City Council Comment [33] RegionalMDOT holding DIFT hearings next weekIf the greenway and three-site plan seems to you like not much to fuss about, perhaps the Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal is more your cup of tea. MDOT is holding four public hearings next week on the draft Environmental Impact Statement for consolidation of several existing truck-train freight transfer yards, or development of a new one. As various alternatives involve razing large stretches of neighborhood (hello, Poletown), some people are understandably unhappy. Location of hearings and links for more info after the cut. Comment [8] • Read More » BusinessGoogle to build Ann Arbor tech center? While Google declined to comment on any firm intent, the Detroit News reports that they’ve been scouting Ann Arbor for a large chunk of real estate: Ann Arbor may become home to a new technology center for up to 1,000 employees from Google Inc., the Internet search engine giant that was recently hired to digitize the University of Michigan’s 19 libraries. Boston and Boulder are mentioned speculatively as other possible locations. Detroit, sadly, is not mentioned except in the context that Ann Arbor has the lowest commercial vacancies in the region. Michigan Business Review has a slightly more real estate-wonky piece on Google’s needs, saying they’re probably interested in existing facilities with little tenant build-out, and that no sites downtown or near campus are likely to fit the bill. UPDATE, 9 June, 9:30am: The News article on Groome’s leaving Ann Arbor seems to summarize her time on Council as “not party-line,” and willing to cross the majority. Comment [11] Arts5th annual 'Shakespeare in the Arb'Every weekend in June, the Residential College and Nichols Arboretum are presenting Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Directed by RC grad Carol Gray and RC professor Kate Mendeloff, the play leads audiences through the Arb as the young Athenian lovers encounter spirits, fairies, and a troupe of crazy players preparing for the Duke. I saw the show last weekend, and highly recommend it—it is one of the stronger shows in the past several years. The performances are Thursday-Sunday starting at 6:30pm. Audience members are encouraged to arrive by 6:00pm to purchase tickets and receive weather information. In case of cancellations, tickets will be honored at a later performance. Some Minority Enrollment at U of M IncreasesToday, the news of an increase in number of deposits to attend U of M among Black and Latino student was reported. Among Black students, there was a 20 percent increase from last year, while Latino students increased 14 percent, unfortunately the number of Native students remained the same, while their percentage decreased almost 8 percent. The increases are particularly important considering last year’s drop in enrollment among underrepresented minority students. LocalBoil Water AlertThe City released a boil water notice this evening. Residents in certain areas of the City of Ann Arbor experienced a loss of water pressure today at approximately 7:30 PM due to a major water main break in the City’s water distribution system. The TV told me the warning was for all of Washtenaw county, so I went out and bought a bunch of water before reading the city notice. If anyone on the north side needs some agua, contact me. Update: The alert has been lifted. Ann Arbor News. Comment [6] |
