Nice use of Google Maps for illustration.

AK-47 or similar assault rifle? You can’t tell that from the casing. You can tell that the bullet was fired from a rifle based on the caliber, but all “assault rifles” use calibers that can be fired from regular rifles.
In fact, since “assault rifle,” under the assault rifle weapons ban, refered mostly to the accessories on the weapon (extended clip, muzzle-flash suppressor, folding stock), you can’t even tell from the bullet whether it was fired from an assault rifle.
Just, you know, a note on firearms. Adding “assault” to the mention of rifle is sensationalism.

But, js, the News said “or similar weapon” – that covers all of those other boring ol’ weapons you’re talking about just fine, doesn’t it? Why you gotta go raining on the News’ attempts to sex up the news?

Look, I like yellow journalism as much as the next guy… Well, no, I guess I don’t.
My AK-47 is a tool.
