MacKinnon on the Late Andrea Dworkin

Posted by Ari Paul on 16. April 2005

U-M Law Prof. Catherine MacKinnon eulogizes Andrea Dworkin in the New York Times this morning.

Only power did not underestimate Andrea Dworkin. Threatened by this Jewish girl from Camden, N.J., the minions of the status quo moved to destroy her credibility and bury her work alive.

Andrea Dworkin saw through male power as a political system – “while the system of gender polarity is real, it is not true,” she said – and exposed the sexual core of male supremacy, the heart of the male darkness. She stood with, and therefore for, sexually abused women. So she was treated as they are treated, denigrated as they are denigrated. She was the intellectual shock troops, the artistic heavy artillery of the women’s movement in our time. She took its heaviest hits.

Cool Cities project presentation and reception Friday

Posted by Murph on 13. April 2005

This Friday, the Ann Arbor Cool Cities Advisory Task Force is hosting a presentation of the project they plan to submit to the State for grant funding:

I write to invite you to a reception this Friday sponsored by the Ann Arbor Cool Cities Advisory Task force and the State Street Area Association to present the details of the project.

Date: Friday, April 15, 2005
Time: 5:00 p.m.
Location: Michigan Theater
What: Media presentation of “Sound Fall” followed by verbal presentation of the theater’s lobby conversion.

Friday’s reception will allow attendees to preview these unique projects, which are also supported by the State Street Area Association and Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority. Refreshments to be served, good times to be had. We hope you all can attend!

See you at the movies,
Newcombe Clark,
Cool Cities Task Force

The selected project was described in an earlier e-mail as,

The final recommendation of the task force is that the City of Ann Arbor submit a joint proposal that focuses on the changing State Street/Central Campus area. The first part includes the State Street Area Association’s plan to put a public art project on the Maynard Street Parking structure. This dynamic sculpture will combine elements of sound and light and was conceived and design in conjunction with the U of M School of Art. Along with the art piece, the Michigan Theater will also be seeking funding to furnish their recently restored grand lobby and to extend the hours of operation of the theater. The space will be made into a community meeting and resting place where people can sit and relax before and after a show and where they can appreciate the full splendor of this historic, city-owned amenity.

It was selected from 12 proposals submitted to the Task Force as the one that the City would submit to the State (The City of Ann Arbor may only put its name on one submission). The Task Force never followed up on my offer to post all twelve ideas to this site.

A panel discussion on downtown Ann Arbor that actually does not include a DDA or Friends of the Greenway member.

Union Yes! at DHL freight in Ohio

Posted by MarkDilley on 12. April 2005

DHL is U of M’s prime vendor for freight.

—More than 200 workers at five DHL-contracted package delivery companies in the Columbus and Toledo, Ohio, areas joined the Teamsters in a series of elections in late March and early April. In Maumee, near Toledo, 39 workers at B&L Express, 16 at Vans Express and 23 at Online Logistics voted to join IBT Local 20. In Columbus, 122 workers at two Allen Freight locations and 32 workers at Flight Line Logistics voted for IBT Local 413. Meanwhile in Brewer, Maine, some 25 DHL workers, members of IBT Local 340 who lost their jobs when a new contractor took over, have won community backing. The Greater Bangor Area Central Labor Council and the community group Food and Medicine formed the Farmer-Labor-Small Business Alliance to mobilize the community and persuade the new DHL contractor, Rydborn Express, to rehire the workers and negotiate a contract.

Biodiesel Tour!

Posted by MarkDilley on 12. April 2005

I was suprised to learn that the Carpenter Road Meijer now has a “B20 biodiesel pump at (its) gas station.”

The Michigan Biodiesel Bus Tour was actually quite an exciting and interesting event. The bus was almost completely full, meaning probably 50 people took part. The first stop was at the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Geagley Motor Fuel Quality Lab, on the MSU campus in East Lansing.

'Your Papers, Please' Coming to Canada and Mexico

Posted by MarkDilley on 12. April 2005

One of the frustrating things about SE Michigan is that Ann Arbor and Detroit culture don’t mix very well. What I mean by that is folks from Detroit find it hard to come to anything in Ann Arbor and folks in Ann Arbor find in near impossible to make it to events in Detroit. With these new regulations, one of the few draws of going to Detroit, easy access to Winsor, Ontario, is slated for elimination. Disgusting. So hurry and explore Detroit, it is a wonderful border town which especially looks wonderful from Windsor. 20 months left, because starting December 31, 2006:

[I]t will require U.S. citizens to show a passport to re-enter the U.S. from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and Panama. Canadian citizens will also have to show their passport to enter the U.S.

The CIA On Campus: Expanding the "Academic Homeland Security Complex"

Posted by MarkDilley on 12. April 2005

I know U of M has many ties to the military industrial complex.

Excerpts from a new essay by William Martin titled “Manufacturing the Homeland Security Campus and Cadre” on the “academic homeland security complex” and the increasing role of the Department of Homeland Securty, CIA and Pentagon on college campuses

But does anyone know about this kind of activity?

Wasting Food on Free Speech

Posted by MarkDilley on 12. April 2005

A good argument about the “fruitality” of direct food action in the face of conservative sauce.

Another conservative speaker was hit with a pie last night—in this case, Dave “the Chairman” Horowitz, who was creamed while agitating the academic masses at Butler University
